How Physician-Led Medical Weight Loss Works: A Guide for Crowley, Lafayette and Acadiana Patients
By Healthy Solutions Clinic · Crowley, Louisiana
Medical weight loss is a weight-management plan built and supervised by a licensed physician. It starts with your health history and measurements, and it can include prescription medication when that is appropriate for you. At Healthy Solutions Clinic in Crowley, we see patients from Crowley, Lafayette and across Acadiana. This guide explains how a physician-led program works, where GLP-1 medications fit in, and what to expect at your first visit.
What is medical weight loss?
Medical weight loss is different from a diet plan or an app. A physician reviews your medical history, current medications, lab work and body measurements. Then you build a plan together.
A plan may include:
- Nutrition and activity goals you can actually keep
- Body composition tracking, not just the number on the scale
- Prescription medication, such as a GLP-1 medication, when you qualify and it is safe for you
- Regular follow-up visits to check progress and side effects and to adjust the plan
The goal is steady, healthy change that you can maintain, with a doctor watching for problems along the way.

How GLP-1 medications fit in
GLP-1 medications are prescription drugs that act on hormone pathways involved in appetite and blood sugar. Two are used most often for weight management:
- Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 receptor.
- Tirzepatide acts on two receptors, GLP-1 and GIP.
These medications are given as a once-weekly injection under the skin. The dose usually starts low and increases gradually. In its 2023 approval announcement for a tirzepatide product, the FDA explained that the medicine reduces appetite and food intake and is meant to be used along with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity (FDA).
Medication is a tool, not the whole plan. Results vary from person to person, and the medication works best alongside changes in eating, activity and sleep.
Want to compare the two? Read our post on tirzepatide vs. semaglutide, or see our semaglutide and tirzepatide program pages.
Who may qualify?
Eligibility is decided by a physician after an evaluation. As a general reference, the FDA approved a tirzepatide product for chronic weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol (FDA).
GLP-1 medications are not right for everyone. Your physician will ask about:
- Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2
- History of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease
- Severe stomach or digestive conditions
- Pregnancy, plans to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
- Other medications, especially insulin or other diabetes medicines

Why physician supervision matters
Weight-loss medications can cause side effects. The most common are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and stomach discomfort. Less common but serious warnings include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and low blood sugar in people taking certain diabetes medicines (FDA).
A physician-led program helps you:
- Start at an appropriate dose and increase it safely
- Manage side effects early
- Check for medication interactions
- Adjust or stop treatment if something isn't working
Protecting muscle while you lose weight
Losing weight can mean losing some muscle along with fat. That's why we track body composition, not just weight. Our body composition analysis shows how your fat and muscle change over time, so your plan can include enough protein and strength work. Learn more in our post on tirzepatide and lean mass.

Frequently asked questions
Is medical weight loss the same as getting a prescription online? No. A physician-led program includes an in-person evaluation, follow-up visits and monitoring for side effects, not just a prescription.
Do I have to take medication? No. Medication is one option. Some patients focus on nutrition, activity and body composition tracking without it.
How fast will I lose weight? It depends on your health, your plan and how your body responds. Your physician will set realistic goals with you.
